In 1939 New York, a forgotten ledger opens onto hidden roads—and a fight over who has the power to name, remember, and possess a person.

On Mott Street in 1939, Winter Garcia has learned to know when New York is running scared. At the newspaper, he learns a fact can be delayed without being disproved; in his father’s law office, a second copy can keep someone from disappearing inside an official lie. He wants City College because he wants power to explain itself. He also wants to be known without being made vulnerable by the knowing.

Then his school ledger forgets him, his mirror goes black, and the beautiful man from his dreams stands behind him without entering the room.

Belgrad is older than worlds, once called love’s eldest son and remembered as wrath. His protection is real. So is its scale. Their bond asks whether recognition creates ownership—and whether love remains love when it cannot hear stop.

Across hidden worlds and beneath Manhattan, power follows names, wounds, promises, duties, and doors. The Age of Names asks what remains of a person when grief, prophecy, empire, family, or love tries to become their only name.

Behind eighteen-year-old Winter Garcia rises the promise of a shining city: ordered, peaceful, and seemingly self-evident in its perfection. Before him is Mott Street—fogged, crowded, dirty, multilingual, argumentative, and alive. The Age of Names asks what the shining city must erase to remain perfect, and whether the disorder of ordinary human relationship may be the very thing that keeps a person free.
